Sediment and dissolved organic matter flow from the Maumee River into western Lake Erie. This material mingles with cyanobacteria (bue-green algae) that have accumulated there. The resulting colors in Lake Erie were visible in this image acquired by Landsat 9 on August 31, 2022.
Located in the US Midwest, the Maumee River runs from northeastern Indiana into northwestern Ohio. It is formed at the confluence of the St. Joseph and St. Marys rivers, meandering northeastwardly for 137 miles (220 km) through an agricultural region before flowing into the Maumee Bay at the city of Toledo.
