Identifying Blooms Off the Mid-Atlantic

This true color image shows high concentrations of microscopic algae (phytoplankton) along the coast and in the Gulf of Maine (north and east of Cape Cod). The MOANA algorithm uses hyperspectral data from PACE's Ocean Color Instrument (OCI) to identify plankton species: Synechococcus (pink) and picoeukaryotes (green) shown here. The true color image was taken by the OCI sensor aboard the PACE satellite on October 25, 2024.
