[09-Aug-18] Onboard the R/V Sally Ride EXPORTS scientists prepare a flow cytometer for operation. Initially developed for medical applications, a flow cytometer can be utilized in oceanographic studies to count and identify phytoplankton species and groups. In addition to capturing images of each individual plankton cell that passes through the instrument, the samples are also tested for their optical properties, helping to identify the species.
