Great Salt Lake
[12-May-24] The Great Salt Lake is the largest saltwater lake in the western hemisphere. Its two-tone appearance in this image is the result of a railroad causeway built in the 1950s, which obstructed the normal mixing of the waters of the lake. Only a few minor streams flow directly into the north, making it much saltier than the rest of the lake. This saltier environment promotes different types of algae from those growing in the southern part of the Great Salt Lake.
