Gulf of Thailand & Andaman Sea

The Gulf of Thailand is seen at the center of this image
The Gulf of Thailand is seen at the center of this image. It is a shallow arm of the South China Sea and is bordered by Thailand, Cambodia, and Vietnam. The gulf is relatively shallow with a maximum depth of only 85 m (279 ft). Strong freshwater inflow from the rivers reduces the gulf's salinity except at greater depths, which are influenced by saltier water flowing from the South China Sea.

The long, north-south oriented peninsula includes the countries of Myanmar (north) and Malaysia (south). To the west, deep blue colors are seen in the Andaman Sea, which reaches depths of 4,200 m (13,800 ft). The arc-shaped line of islands at left edge of this image are associated with the boundary of a tectonic plate. This plate boundary is one of the most seismically active belts in the world. This image was taken by the OCI sensor aboard the PACE spacecraft on December 1, 2025.
