Phytoplankton Physiology from Satellite Chlorophyll Fluorescence

Fluorescence from the chlorophyll pigment is the only unambiguous signal measured from satellite that can be exclusively attributed to phytoplankton. However, developing a comprehensive understanding of factors regulating satellite-derived fluorescence has been difficult. The fluorescence signal contains a wealth of information on pigment biomass and phytoplankton physiological processes such as photoprotection, photoacclimation, and response to nutrient stress. In this presentation, we review recent progress untangling these effects in the global ocean and outline future challenges working with satellite fluorescence data, particularly in the context of next-generation ocean color satellite missions.
