Two Views of the Benguela Current
[16-May-25] These images show a bloom of microscopic algae, known as phytoplankton, in the Benguela Current off the west coast of southern Africa. The true color image on the left was taken by the Ocean Color Instrument (OCI) sensor aboard the PACE satellite on May 16, 2025. Purple, teal, and pink colors in the right image show plankton types (Prochlorococcus, picoeukaryotes, and Synechococcus, respectively) determined using the MOANA algorithm.
What's Blooming in Benguela Current is another version of the Plankton types image.
