Located off Argentina's east coast, the Falkland Islands (Islas Malvinas) are surrounded by waters that are rich in microscopic algae known as phytoplankton. In the Argentine Sea, phytoplankton blooms are caused by a confluence of cold, nutrient-rich currents and warmer coastal waters. In this image – taken by the Ocean Color Instrument (OCI) sensor aboard the PACE satellite on December 28, 2024 – blooms appear as beautiful green, teal and light blue colors.
